Facts about Martial Arts for Kids – Part 5

13 November, 2009 (13:53) | Choreography Videos | By: admin

“Will my child become more violent from learning karate, jujitsu, or another martial art?”

In a word, “No.” Children learn self-control by practicing martial arts; and the code of conduct that is enforced, within the studio, is carried outside into every day life. The average martial arts school works with parents, and academic teachers, toward the goal of optimum student success.

When you see a Karate demonstration team perform, that is not an indicator of the life skills taught within the Karate class. It is the “flashiest” component of Karate training, presented to capture the public attention. Ten minutes of kids using ancient weapons, breaking, and working in synchronized choreography, is more interesting to the public, than a lecture, by me, about dealing with bullies without violence.

However, let’s take a closer look at the ten minutes of flash. The next time you see a martial arts demonstration team, remember those children have to practice those techniques over and over again. This requires self-discipline, goal setting, perseverance, and each child being a team player.

There is no room for a “one way” personality on any martial arts demonstration team. Such a personality would work against a good public performance. In a typical Karate class, all of the above-mentioned life skills are learned and much more.

Children learn much more about violence on the television, playing with video games, and dealing with daily life, than they will ever learn in a karate class. Even if a Karate teacher was the classic “evil sensei,” that you may have seen in the Karate Kid movie or on Kung Fu Theatre, most children can think of far worse violence.

All you have to do is watch the news, cartoons, listen to the radio, or read a newspaper, to see things worse than unsupervised hand-to-hand combat. So, the self-defense methods taught to children actually pale in comparison to school shootings, bombings, wars, and drive-by shootings.

Karate was created by unarmed civilians on the island of Okinawa and was taught in secret among family members for their personal protection. The philosophy, within a martial arts school, will not always be the same, but the seeds of violence are not sown within a martial arts setting.

All you have to do is look around you to see more, and far worse, violence than learning self-defense – integrated with constructive life skills. The fact is a martial artist is not a “street fighter.” If that were a requirement, we would recruit the toughest kids in North Providence.

As I explain to the children in my Karate and Jujitsu
classes, “Never forget the word, “artist,” means to be
creative, to be an innovator, and to think for yourself.” Children who learn martial arts are more apt to be well adjusted and defuse a potentially violent situation.

On top of that, most children who study Karate, or any other martial art, will not be “trouble makers.” The children we teach from the Greater Providence, Rhode Island area have learned enough about leadership, in our Karate and Jujitsu classes, to think for themselves. For parents, the gift of martial arts training to their children has many rewards, right now, and into their future.

Step Aerobics For Your Health

13 November, 2009 (01:54) | Choreography Videos | By: admin

One of the more popular aerobic exercises is step aerobics. Most of the time step aerobics is conducted as a class in a gym. This can really be fun and you can make a lot of good friends. But with the number of videos that have hit the market many people do step aerobics at home. There are also the many TV programs that conduct daily exercise classes. Most of the TV exercise classes conduct a variety of aerobics so if you are into step aerobics only this may not be for you.
Step aerobics is done on a platform where you step up and down usually to the beat of music. It is recommended that you not exceed 128 BPM as this can cause injury. Sometimes this can cause people to want to go faster to get a better workout. Well you can actually get a better workout by staying below the 128 BPM and modifying your routines. The platforms are usually from 6 to 10 inches. For a better workout if you are in good physical condition choose the higher platform. You can stay below 128 BPM and achieve the same step aerobic workout.
But before you even get started doing your step aerobic routines, it is a good practice to warm up for about 10 minutes doing stretching exercise and maybe some light jogging.
Another thing that is very important is the Choreography. Increasing power and force can add significantly to the intensity of your routine and cardiovascular benefits. Raising you upper limbs and bringing your knees up higher is also helpful. This way you can get that good workout that you want and still stay below 128 BPM.
Sometimes we get very enthusiastic and want to to do step aerobics everyday. This is not a good idea. Most experts suggest that you limit step aerobics to no more than 4 days a week. But you are encouraged to participate in cross training activities with equipment you find in a gym or bicycling. The idea is that you need to be cognizant of possible injury doing step aerobics, especially if you increase the tempo beyond 128 BPM.

Belly Dance Bloopers

12 November, 2009 (13:53) | Choreography Videos | By: admin

What can I say? If it could happen, it did happen to me!

Just about every dancer out there has a blooper story to tell. Bloopers are almost like a right of passage and there are a lot of us out there that are seasoned!

Bloopers can happen for many reasons; like you forgot to check your costume and make sure your snaps and hooks are sewn on tightly. I mean, when you dance every weekend and perform 2 to 4 shows in a night your costumes will start to suffer. I had ten costumes that I checked and made sure they were ready to dance in. Than, I just started to let the “costume check” slide a little. By appearance my costumes looked good but hidden from the general public were a few pins here and there. And that my friends is where the bloopers come to life.

I remember I was dancing for a recreational camp for kids and there had to be at least 200 kids ranging in ages from kindergarten up to teenagers all watching me perform. Before I knew it as I was doing my favorite turn, my back straps broke and there for a few seconds were my breasts bared for everyone to see. The younger kids didn’t quite get what had happened but the older ones did. Fortunately I had my niece with me who pinned my back straps together and I went back out to continue my performance. To my dismay the group leaders were already leading the kids out of the room and only a few stayed to see me finish. I don’t think I helped our community out much at that performance. To my knowledge they haven’t invited any belly dancers back. Moral of the story: Check your snaps and hooks!

Weight fluctuation is another blooper waiting to happen. I learned the hard way that my daughter’s socks are not a good substitution for bra pads. I had lost weight and fixed one costume but not the other. I figured that socks would give me the boost I needed while being hidden from view. So I decided to wear the costume that I didn’t fix first because what did I have to fear, I had my daughters socks. But socks as I found out have a mind of their own.

I was dancing for a huge group of Diplomats from Iran and our FBI at a local restaurant that I perform at. Everybody was yelling my name and clapping as I came out ready to dance the night away. And that was exactly what I was doing until I noticed a few grins and giggles from the audience. One man pointed to my bra and from my vantage point, my breasts and bra looked fine. But when I did a chest circle there to my horror was my daughter’s sock hanging down my right side. So I did what any professional would do, I pulled it out and threw it. Everybody laughed and applauded and I continued to dance with one big breast and one small breast. After the evening was over and everybody had left I went looking for my daughter’s sock. I couldn’t find it anywhere and even had the wait staff (who were still in hysterics) help me look for it. But it was no where to be found. Weeks past and I forgot about the missing sock until the owner of the restaurant told me that my sock was given to the head diplomat as a gift and reminder of his stay here. So whoever took it had it framed and presented it to him. Also to go along with the sock were 5 video cameras that captured the infamous sock rolling down my right side. So moral of this story: bra pads!

Long skirts can be a bloopers best friend. I like my skirts long because I am short and if my skirts are just a little above my ankles they make me look even shorter. So the bottoms of my skirts get dirty and I have to wash them a lot. I had one particularly long skirt that I just loved. It was separate from my belt and I loved this because than I could mix and match to my hearts content. Well, one evening I wore my favorite skirt for a big dinner party at a nightclub I use to dance at. The family who had the dinner party filled most of the club. They had especially asked for me and I was very honored to dance for them. So the night began very innocently with me dancing around tables and on chairs. They even put me up on the tables a few times. It’s amazing what your skirt can get caught on. There I was dancing and just finishing up my drum solo when I decided I wanted to end on stage. So I jumped down off the table and began to stroll over to the stage only to realize that my skirt didn’t want to come with me. As my audience tried to get me unstuck my skirt somehow got pulled down and was close to my knees. (Thank God I had on matching underwear). Finally my skirt was pulled free and I gracefully pulled my skirt up and was able to finish the last minute of my show. The family loved the little drama and said that they would remember that night for a long time. The moral of this story: Stay on the stage and don’t dance on tables!

Props can either be friend or foe. Sometimes I really believe my veil, cane or sword is on the side of the bloopers. You know how it is, you practice in the studio or home and everything goes great but as soon as you get out and perform something bizarre happens to your prop. I have often wondered if my props were possessed. It’s amazing how your veil will get caught on your costume or how your cane flies out of your hand.

My sword was better behaved but would occasionally act up.

One evening in Fort Worth I was dancing in a very crowded restaurant and I was dancing with my cane. Everybody was enjoying themselves and the owner of the restaurant was sitting at a table not far from our little stage. I was twirling the heck out of my cane when to my surprise the cane flew out of my hand and landed on the restaurant owners lap. The whole restaurant applauded and yelled for more. So I slowly went up to the restaurant owner and asked for my cane and he gave it back to me with an amused look on his face. Fortunately for me my cane music was almost over and I didn’t have to try for another amazing encore with my cane. So the moral of this story: If you mess up with your prop, make it look good!

The last of the bloopers are the hidden kind. You know, the kind that don’t show themselves until you are on stage dancing and than you realize that the stage is uneven or worse you just stepped on something that feels very slimy. And let’s not forget the shrinking stage.

Let’s face it, when we get hired to dance at a party or event, we can’t always check the stage out before hand. I remember when I was hired for a party and I asked how big was the space where I was dancing and they replied that it was a good sized space, at least half of a room. So I choreographed a dance accordingly to what I was told. Well, my stage was 4ft by 3ft. and by a raging fire in a fireplace with little kids sitting all around me. My choreography changed immediately and I was amazed that I didn’t pass out from the heat.

The uneven stage is the one blooper that hides itself very well. I have been on stages that looked even but when I danced on them turned me into a lopsided sideshow. I remember at this one restaurant that whenever I would spin that I would slowly but surely spin into a table on the right side of the stage each time. I would stop at that table just before I’d loose it. I finally asked the other dancers if they did the same thing and they all replied yes. Thank God! Who wants to be lopsided alone?

The slimy story gives me shivers up my spine so I think I’ll pass on it. Besides I think you can visualize the scenario without me giving you the details.

So these are just a few of my blooper stories. The one thing I realized throughout my 22 years in dance is that even though we all strive for perfection in our dance, the bloopers keep us grounded. Sometimes I think back and have to laugh at the dumb and embarrassing things that have happened to me. If you can laugh at yourself than you have just given yourself a wonderful gift. Laughter keeps us humble and it keeps us healthy. So keep on laughing and keep on dancing!

Britney Spears Tickets – The Pop Phenomenon Returns

12 November, 2009 (02:05) | Choreography Videos | By: admin

Britney Spears tickets are still some of the most sought-after on the entertainment market, and this musical and cultural diva has been drawing headlines for years and for many different reasons. Despite recent placement in the tabloids for a plethora of issues, many have already forgotten that Spears became a hot story initially because of her incredible ability to put on an amazing live show. She’s also lived a full life already, and a look at that life will provide some insight as to how she got to where she is and where she may be headed.
Early Life
Britney Jean Spears was born on December 2, 1981 in McComb, Mississippi and was raised in Kentwood, Louisiana. She was born into a middle class family, as her father was a contractor and her mother a grade school teacher. She has a brother and a sister, and her overall childhood could be considered “normal” by many definitions.
Spears’ first real interest was gymnastics, which would later serve her well on stage. She competed in several competitions until she was nine, and began to learn the art of dance as well at about that same time. Her entertainment-driven aspirations were defined early, as she was auditioning for the Disney Channel’s “The New Mickey Mouse Club” when she was eight years old.
These auditions, although not successful in the sense that she wasn’t picked up for the dancing troupe, did gain her the first level of notice that she enjoyed within the industry. She was spotted by an industry agent and spent the next few summers at a performing arts school in New York and even appeared in a few off-Broadway productions.
She returned to Disney a few years later and was ultimately invited to participate in the program along with future stars such as Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake, who would eventually occupy a prominent space in Spears’ life for a time.
The Disney show enjoyed a successful run, but ultimately ended, and from there Spears had to make a career choice – dancing on stage in theater productions or singing. Spears made the choice to sing, and after a very brief stint with a pop band, she decided to go solo with her efforts. It turned out to be a good decision.
Musical Career
Spears put out a series of demo tapes and was soon signed to a recording contract. She released her first single, “…Baby One More Time” in late 1998, and it shot to the top of several charts. Spears’ looks and overall image were also a big draw, and her video that accompanied the release was in demand all over the world.
Her debut album of the same title was released in early 1999, and all it did was achieve 14x platinum levels in sales. Spears’ dancing ability was also an instant smash with music fans, and Britney Spears tickets quickly became nearly impossible to find. Overall, Spears has released six albums and enjoyed seven number-one singles from those albums on charts around the world.
Personal Spotlight
Given her beauty and innocent image, Spears has also been the target of the tabloids almost since the day she hit the scene. Her much-publicized romantic relationship with Timberlake was an attraction to Hollywood followers, and her marriage to Kevin Federline also faced immense scrutiny.
Generally speaking, though, Spears is where she is because of her look, her talent and her ability to put on an incredible live show, complete with athletic and intricate choreography and an engaging style. If you want total entertainment at a concert, you need to secure Britney Spears tickets as she returns to the stage.

The Tale of Swan Lake Barbie is One Many of Us are Familiar With

10 November, 2009 (01:56) | Choreography Videos | By: admin

In this story a beautiful princess is transformed into a swan by day and princess by night. There is of course an evil magician and a handsome prince. These are the basic ingredients which are found in every re-telling of Swan Lake. Now in the Swan Lake Barbie version things are a little different but you get a happy ending, since this story is aimed at little girls.

The Swan Lake Barbie comes both as a doll and also as a video. In the doll you will find that Barbie is dressed in a costume that is similar to her movie costume. This very attractive outfit is pink, the traditional Barbie color that has a shimmery skirt. To mimic her wings the sleeves of the dress are split into sections that resemble wings.

Now as with all of the Barbie dolls the Swan Lake Barbie can be given as a birthday gift for a little girl that you know. Since this doll is also a character of a movie and a fairy tale it is possible to consider this Swan Lake Barbie as a collector’s item.

This would of course mean that adults would have no problems with collecting this doll to add to their collection. The doll’s box can be left intact as the scenes that are depicted on the box are a suitable background.

While the gift a Swan Lake Barbie doll is something that any little girl would love to have, seeing the movie version may make fairytales and ballet a more achievable dream. In the Swan Lake Barbie story the heroine must find the courage to defeat an evil wizard.

This wizard uses Swan Lake Barbie to bring a feud alive between two kingdoms. While this movie is not considered as being as magical as the previous Barbie movies there are many fantastic elements to look at.

The first one is the talented cast of real life actors and actresses. These individuals have given their best for the story to come alive. The element that brings the story to life is that of the music score. The London Symphony plays Tchaikovsky’s original musical score brilliantly. And finally the choreography of the ballet sequences has the New York City Ballet providing a sense of realism to the movie’s dance sequences.

While there may be people who are not too happy with this movie the Swan Lake Barbie is one that young girls will not mind watching. And while many fairytales need to be told over and over again to come alive in the minds of children, the movie version of Swan Lake Barbie will bring this magic straight into the lives of your family.

Las Vegas Must-see Shows

9 November, 2009 (13:56) | Choreography Videos | By: admin

Here are some of just a few of the must see shows in Las Vegas…

If you have ever seen the Phantom of The Opera at the movies or on stage and enjoyed it, you must see the Phantom of The Opera: The Las Vegas Spectacular at the Venetian. This rendition is by far the most grand and theatrical of the stage performances, complete with state of the art special effects including a massive chandelier that magically assembles itself over the audience in the opening act. I was fortunate enough to see this show on my recent visit to Las Vegas, and having seen it on Broadway, this version deserves to be called spectacular. A VIP package is available for those who would like to get a backstage tour and private meet-and-greet with the cast members after the show.

Also at the Venetian is one of my favorite shows in Las Vegas, Blue Man Group. This show really is something that has to be seen and cannot be easily explained. It is like trying to tell an inside joke that has been translated from German. I can explain to you that the show includes hilarious comedy, powerful percussive music, special effects that will leave you scratching your head wondering how they did that, and audience participation, but unless you see the show for yourself, you really won’t understand why it is so great. If you want to be completely entertained from curtain open to curtain close, go see Blue Man Group.

One of the newest and hottest shows in Las Vegas is Le Rêve, at where else but the one of newest and hottest hotels, The Wynn. Named after a painting by Pablo Picasso owned by hotel owner Steve Wynn, Le Rêve means “The Dream” in French. This show lives up to its name with amazing visuals including angels swooping down from above and snatching mortals which sometimes plummet back down to earth. The circular stage, which seems to be more technologically advanced than most airplanes, shifts and changes depending on the scene. Sometimes it drops below the water line to provide a diving pool for the acrobats, sometimes it partially or completely surfaces to provide a flat surface, and other times it rises high in a multi-level configuration. It is not secret that Le Rêve was the brainchild of Franco Dragone, producer of shows such as O, La Nouba, and Mystere, and borrows elements from the Cirque du Soleil franchise. However, the special effects, technology, choreography and sheer beauty of this show makes it a must see for anyone who likes to be amazed. Just a note for our listeners: Le Rêve’ VIP Indulgence Package will get you luxurious seats with your own video monitor, a bottle of champagne, and chocolate covered strawberries for only $179 per person.

Of course if you prefer to see a Cirque du Soleil show, you’re in luck. There are currently five Cirque shows playing in Vegas. From O’s watery dreamlike production, to the sensual sexiness of Zumanity, to the classic Beatles’ inspired LOVE, there are some entertaining shows to see. My personal favorite is the frequently overlooked KÀ playing at the MGM Grand, which tells a compelling and action packed epic story in a strange postindustrial theatre.

What would Las Vegas be without showgirls? If you’re looking for a show that screams Vegas, look no further than Jubilee! at Bally’s Hotel and Casino. An old fashioned show with singing, dancing, a little comedy, and the sinking of the Titanic, Jubilee! Is sure to please those looking for classic Vegas entertainment. Just a warning though, many of those showgirls will be topless so plan accordingly.

There are just so many great shows in Las Vegas, that there is no way to report them all here. One thing is certain though: while staying in Las Vegas, you certainly won’t be bored.Listen to the full episode of Universe of Luxury: Las Vegas Edition

Dance Fitness Training

8 November, 2009 (02:02) | Choreography Videos | By: admin

You don’t have to be a professional dancer to get all of the great benefits from getting your groove on. Realizing this, many people have migrated to dancing for fitness. From group classes to quality DVDs to simply blasting the radio in the living room, dancing has proven itself a great way to burn calories while having a good time and lots of fun.

Many health clubs have started offering fitness dance classes to their members. Group classes are great for beginners who want to learn the moves and make new friends. One of the most popular of these is Zumba. Zumba combines upbeat Latin music with moves that are easy enough for almost anyone to learn. Plus, the Zumba routine incorporates fast-paced intervals that can help torch calories and fat. When done right, this dance session can burn more than 500 calories in an hour.

Another popular group class for dance fitness is the LesMills Body Jam program. This routine focuses on hip hop music and teaches each choreographed routine for three months. This means participants can master a routine over time without worrying about new steps each week. The classes last about an hour, and include heart-pumping, fast-paced segments as well as slower beats to let you catch your breath. This makes it a great option for dancers of all abilities.

Of course, there are also traditional dance classes that focus on learning actual performance routines. Ballroom dancing has become more and more popular, but jazz, hip hop, and swing dance are also great for burning calories. Just remember, these courses focus more on choreography than on getting in shape. They are still great for your health, but you won’t burn as many calories in an instructional class.

For those people who don’t want to show off their dancing skills in a group, there are countless DVD programs that provide instruction, music, and motivation right in your own home. Just like group classes, there are two big styles of dance videos. First, there are the fitness DVDs that incorporate dance as another way to burn calories. Then, there are dedicated dance DVD’s that teach you a formal routine. Either way, you’re sure to enjoy some fun cardio exercises with these products.

In addition to getting your heart rate up, dancing also improves coordination, balance, and flexibility. This makes it a great, comprehensive and complete workout for people of all ages. You can dance with your family, friends, your kids, or by yourself. Plus, there are many different varieties of dance styles to choose from. From hip hop to belly dancing to even new pole dancing fitness routines, there is sure to be one that will suit your interests and abilities.
